The Twinning came about as a result of a request from Le Pouliguen to the then French Consul in Cardiff for a recommendation for twinning with a town in South Wales. Llantwit Major was suggested, being of similar size and geographically similar proximity to the coast.

The association was originally established in 1982 as a Community Twinning Association with support from Llantwit Major Town Council.

The Association was inactive for several years due to the sudden resignation, in 2012, of its chairman. But the efforts of some dedicated individuals have led to its resurgence, and in 2019 members were ready to visit had it not been for COVID19 among other things!
